Length Unit Conversion Guide
The length converter covers all units from the metric and imperial systems. Common conversions include metres to feet (1 m = 3.28084 ft), kilometres to miles (1 km = 0.621371 mi), feet to metres (1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly), inches to centimetres (1 in = 2.54 cm exactly), and miles to kilometres (1 mi = 1.60934 km).
For maritime and aviation use, the converter also supports nautical miles (1 nmi = 1,852 m) and historical survey units including furlongs (1 furlong = 201.168 m) and chains (1 chain = 20.1168 m). A cricket pitch is exactly 1 chain in length.
Metric vs Imperial: Key Differences
Only three countries — the USA, Myanmar and Liberia — primarily use imperial units. The rest of the world uses the metric system. The key conversions to remember: 1 mile = 1.609 km, 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 yard = 0.9144 m, 1 foot = 30.48 cm. All these ratios are exact by international definition — there is no rounding involved.
Area Unit Conversion Guide
The area converter covers international standards and South Asian land units. Common conversions include square feet to square metres (1 ft² = 0.0929 m²), acres to hectares (1 acre = 0.404686 ha), hectares to acres (1 ha = 2.47105 acres), and square metres to square feet (1 m² = 10.7639 ft²).
Marla, Kanal and Bigha — South Asian Land Units
Land measurement in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh uses units not found in the metric or imperial systems. The Marla is the base unit — 1 Marla = 272.25 sq ft = 25.2929 m². Twenty Marla make 1 Kanal, and 8 Kanal make 1 Acre. So 1 Kanal = 20 Marla = 5,445 sq ft = 505.857 m².
The Bigha varies by region. The UP (Uttar Pradesh) standard is 2,529 m² = 0.625 acres. In West Bengal it is smaller, around 1,337 m². Always confirm the local definition when buying or selling land. The Murabba is used in Punjab — 1 Murabba = 25 Acres = 500 Kanal = 10,000 Marla.
The Ground unit is used in South India, particularly Tamil Nadu — 1 Ground = 222.967 m² = 2,400 sq ft. The Sq Yard (Gaj) is widely used in construction across India — 1 Gaj = 0.836 m² = 9 sq ft.
Acre vs Hectare — Global Agriculture Standard
The hectare is the global metric standard for large land areas, used in agriculture, forestry and urban planning worldwide. The acre is used primarily in the US, UK, and South Asia. A standard football pitch is approximately 0.7 hectares or 1.73 acres. A single-family residential plot in Pakistan is typically 5 Marla (125 sq yards) to 1 Kanal (20 Marla).
